FOUNDER / DESIGNER / ARCHITECT

Designing from one perspective. Designing for many.

Arius Hounwanou is a designer, architect, and creative problem solver whose work brings together architecture, visual storytelling, experience, and communication.

BENIN → UNITED STATES
02 — THE ORIGIN

Shaped by Places. Informed by Perspectives.

Growing up in Benin before studying and building his career in the United States exposed Arius to different environments, cultures, and ways of seeing the world. Those experiences continue to influence how he approaches design — with attention to context, curiosity about people, and an appreciation for how differently the same space, message, or idea can be experienced. Architecture provided the foundation.

Over more than ten years of practice, that foundation expanded into visualization, branding, communication, project management, and experience design. Today, Arius approaches design as a way of thinking rather than a single discipline. Whether working with a building, a brand, a digital experience, or a visual story, he begins by understanding the problem, the context, and the people the work is intended to reach.

That perspective is the foundation of Ayi Studio.

03 — THE EVOLUTION

Architecture was the beginning. Design became the language.

Architecture taught Arius how to think through complexity — to understand a problem before developing a solution, balance creative ideas with practical constraints, and recognize how individual decisions contribute to a larger whole. Most importantly, it taught him to consider the people experiencing the design and how their needs, expectations, and perspectives should influence the decisions behind it.

That way of thinking has stayed with him well beyond architecture. Over more than a decade of practice, Arius has worked across public-sector, commercial, mixed-use, and residential environments, leading design efforts, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing project delivery, developing visualizations, and communicating complex ideas to clients and stakeholders. These experiences have reinforced his belief that good design begins with understanding — understanding the objective, the intended audience, what they need to understand or accomplish, and how design can make that connection clearer.

That approach continues to guide the work at Ayi Studio, regardless of whether the challenge involves a space, a brand, a digital experience, or a visual story.

04 — PERSPECTIVE

Design Is About People

For Arius, design is not simply about creating something visually appealing. It is about creating something with purpose — something that responds to the needs of the people who will experience it. Whether shaping a physical space, developing a visualization, building a brand, designing a digital experience, or communicating an idea through a presentation, the work should make something clearer, more useful, and easier to engage with. A space should support how people move, gather, and connect. A visualization should help someone understand a future environment before it exists. A brand should communicate what an organization represents and create something people can recognize and remember. A digital experience should make information easier to find and interactions easier to navigate. A presentation should help an idea communicate clearly rather than simply look polished.

Across each of these forms of design, the goal remains the same: to create a clear and meaningful connection between an idea and the people experiencing it.

Good design solves a problem. Great design helps people.

05 — CAPABILITIES

Different disciplines. One connected process.

Architecture provides a foundation in space, systems, and technical rigor. Visualization makes ideas tangible. Brand and communication clarify what an organization stands for. Experience design considers how people interact with those ideas. Project management turns concepts into coordinated action.

06 — HOW ARIUS THINKS

Exploring the challenge. Refining the solution.

Arius is naturally drawn to complex problems — the projects where the solution is not immediately obvious and where multiple priorities need to come together.

His architectural experience provides a strong technical foundation for navigating those challenges, from design development and construction documentation to multidisciplinary coordination, project schedules, stakeholder communication, and quality control. But technical knowledge is only part of the process.

The work also requires curiosity and a willingness to look at a problem from another angle.

09 — SERVICE

At the center of the work is people.

Design, for Arius, is ultimately a form of service. The goal is to make an idea clearer, a space more useful, a story more compelling, or an experience easier to navigate.
